Preventive Care for Cats
Help your cat live a longer, happier life.
Preventive care is a vital part of helping your cat live a long, healthy, and comfortable life. Regular wellness visits not only provide peace of mind, but also allow us to detect potential health concerns early—often before they become more serious or costly to manage.
How often should my cat see a veterinarian?
At East Towne Veterinary Clinic, our preventive care recommendations are guided by standards set by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). From there, our veterinarians personalize each care plan based on your cat’s age, lifestyle, and medical history.
In most cases, we recommend scheduling at least one comprehensive exam each year. During this visit, your veterinarian will review your cat’s medical history, observe behavior, discuss nutrition, and monitor any existing or developing health conditions.
What should I expect from a preventive care exam?
Your cat’s annual exam is similar to a yearly physical for people. During the appointment, we’ll check their temperature, examine their eyes, ears, teeth, and skin, listen to their heart and lungs, and assess joint health and mobility.
Your veterinarian may also provide guidance on:
-
Vaccinations tailored to your cat’s lifestyle and risk factors
Core vaccines typically include rabies and feline distemper, with additional vaccines such as feline leukemia (FeLV) recommended when appropriate. -
Parasite prevention to protect against fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms.
-
Diagnostic testing to identify health concerns that may not be apparent during a physical exam and to confirm your cat is free from internal parasites.
At the end of your cat’s visit, your veterinarian will take time to answer any questions and discuss additional services that may support their long-term health, including spay or neutering, microchipping, and dental care.
